For my independent reading assignment, I chose the book Gossip Girl #12: It Had to be You, by Cecily Von Zeigesar. Although its the last book from the saga, the story goes back to the beginning, before all the story that was told in the past eleven books ever happened. The story starts by talking about young Serena and Blair, when they were just getting into Middle School, and their friendship was as good as ever, along with their friend, Nate. Serena and Blair both seem to be secretly in love with Nate, and he loves both of them back, which causes him to get really confused about his thoughts. The tension between the friends finally end when Blair declares love for Nate, and although Nate was madly in love with Serena, he takes a chance on Blair, leaving poor Serena alone with a broken heart. Lots of hearts and dreams are broken, and lots of secrets are kept, which finally makes Serena leave to boarding school as soon as possible with no consent of her friends. Although some doubts were cleared up or just simply ignored with Serena's and Nate's silence about their feelings towards each other, the question remains: Why does Serena leaves town and maintains total silent about her status?
After reading the final book of the saga, I have a clear opinion about the whole story and the impact it caused on my life. The story was basically a flashback, which was a bit confusing but it was a creative idea made by the author, which solved most of the doubts that I had when I was reading the saga. I believe that this book caused an impact because it described the life of really wealthy people, and how all that wealth and power can get to ruin happiness or can lead to mess up someone's life. I would recommend this book because the story is not only interesting, but it describes a social problematic based on wealth and power, which many in the world have as their main goal in life but they do not analyze all the counter effects that ambition can provide. I would not recommend this book to the people who just like plain fiction or magic because its mostly based on reality and its a really slow story told in clear detail. In conclusion, this story can be really interesting and it gives the opportunity to the reader to explore deeper boundaries beneath the main topic, or simply read a really good book.
