Have you ever questioned yourself, how does media affect my lifestyle?
I decided to compare and contrast two articles about new media, in which I had the chance to see the benefits and disadvantages that social media has on a teenager, and how it can affect daily life based on some examples given by the articles. The first article chosen was Teens follow the disturbing media trend: The Kylie Jenner challenge, written by Suri Crowe and based on investigations and opinions of Dr. Petry. This article talks about a new challenge that was proposed by Kylie Jenner, a member of the Kardashian clan, in order to push her fans into expanding their lips with the purpose or looking more like her, which is ironic based on the fact that her lips had been through plastic surgeon. This event in a current social media problematic because it all happened via the social networks such as Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube, where not only Kylie was able to communicate with her fans, but also her fans were able to comment about the challenge and expose the results after the challenge. Basically, Kylie Jenner's challenge was a representation of the ignorance that flows through the social media every single day and the ambitions that fans have in order to become more like a famous person, which can increase with the use of media due to all the users that constantly use accounts on the internet.
The second article I chose was Impact of New Media on Teenagers, by Dr. Durgesh, which was mainly about an investigation that he had made about the pros and cons about social media and how this concerns parents. What the author is trying to express is his opinion about social media, which is that the existence of media in society is not the reason to blame the conditions of actuality, rather the use the teenagers give to it and how it affects their daily life. Based on his own words, the main use of social media is in the benefit of the teenagers' knowledge and communication with the rest of the society, which sometimes can end harmfully due to the either negative or positive effects that this can bring. Basically, the author argues along the article about how the internet has changed society positively but the use that the teens give to it is what affects the results, and as long as every teen or adult use it responsibly, there is no possible harm.
Although the two article that I chose are completely different based on the type of information that they present, they both communicate the same message in their own way. These two articles are completely different because one of them is an explanation of the effects of media use and the other one is an example of how teens can be affected by this. What these two articles have in common is that they both present a clear idea about how technology provides with information that can make teens feel attacked or pressured of a certain beauty standard, just like Dr.Durgesh expresses and Suri Crowe evidences it. Another idea that both article have in common is that although social media might be seen as a bad effect to society, this serves as a good information provider and a way to communicate with the rest of the world, just like Dr. Durgesh and Suri Crowe demonstrate by using their articles through social media in order to inform society about a huge problematic and examples. In conclusion, I believe that although these two articles are not strictly related to one another, they work together as a pair by using the article by Dr. Durgesh as a proposal of ideas and problematics, and Suri Crowe's article as a clear example of the negative effects of the presented problematic.
