"PROCTOR: Can you speak one minute without we land in Hell again? I am sick of Hell!"
In the book "The Crucible," by Arthur Miller, the character John Proctor is a well known farmer in Salem Village. This character might be seen from different perspectives from multiple readers, either as a villain or as a hero. Based on the information that the book has given up to this moment, I consider that John is a hidden hero, who might not be seen this way by many due to his strict personality and the pride that keeps him from going to church. An argument for this thought of mine could be based on the fact that Proctor has a lot of power in the village and above all farmers, which is why I have hope that he could turn his personality and use that power to contribute to the society and impulse justice. Proctor not only has power but he is a really intelligent man due to the fact that he is constantly involved in business within his land and he builds up strategies for a better economy, which is a really important factor that the citizens might not notice. Basically, Proctor has all the characteristics needed to build a positive hero, which is why what will happen next in the story will depend on how he acts and uses these advantages.
The vision of John Proctor as a hero can be seen throughout the story, which as I said before, it might have not been noticed by most of the readers as a result of having a certain image of this character, that might have been built based on what the other characters express. An example of this is when John talks to Abigail in the first act in order to clear their relationship, and although Abigail was trying to influence him, he kept his purpose of making his wife more confident. A second example of this occurs in act one, when he denies being a part of the investigation for witchcraft because he did not believed in all the theories and he knew what could happen in the village if this came out. In conclusion, John Proctor base all his actions on what he knows and believes that is best for the village and his family, which might not be perceived by the citizens and leads them into thinking that he is a villain based on what he shows through his personality.
